R. L . Proffit Dear Sister

respecks to you I am
thank full to have the
good news to writ you
that I am yet numberd
a mong the live ing
while hund ards & thousands
are dailey deprived of the
sweatness of life this is
all the good news I have
but I have the sad and
hart brakeing news to
write you of the death of
our beloved brother C.L.P.
he departed this life March
the 25 the doctor who -
[page 2]
attended him in his last
hours said it was an
inflamationn of the brain
he had not been sick but
3 or 4 dayes and had not been
bad of untill a few hours
before he died he had been
able to walk a bout and do
his cooking untill the night
before he died he complained
of his head and brest
I have been informed by Wm
West and Thomas Walsh
that he died quite easey
with out a word or a
groan he clowsed his eyes
and seemed as if he had just
drooped in to a sweat sleap
[page 3]
his doctor was sent for
and he came immediatly but
could not doo any good he
staid with him untill afew
minuts before his departure
allso his Sargeon sat by
him untill he was dead
he has a high repitationn
in his companey mutch
loved by his officers and
in fact by the hold Reg
who was acquainted
with hin they Sent for
A.J. and I fourth with
and we went and Saw
him deseantly put a way
we had him washed and
dressed in white [????y]
[page 4]
his officers has a good coffin
made for him and put him
a way with thare own hands
they said he was a good
Soldier they never heard
of his grumbling at any
duty he had to do since he
had been with the Reg
it is hard to give up one
So dear but these are things
that we haft to do when the
Creater of all things sees fit
to call his people from time
to eternity we might just
give them up with out a
groan but the human
nature cant bee satis fied
So easy look on the next
