Mr James Robinson
Dear Friend I seat my self this
eavning to let you know that I
am well hoping when those fiew
lines comes to hand they may find
you & all of your family well. &c .
well Jim I haint know news
to rite to you every thing is quiet
a long the lines our picket lines
are clost to gether .&c the yankees
keeps shelling the city but dont do
mutch dammage : Jim I have herd
cannon every day ever since the 4th
of may Jim I have bin in severl
heard fights this summer but
has come throug Safe so far I was struck
on the side with a peace of a shell
at the fights near knotaway C. H [1]
but it dident hurt me mutch
Jim they has bin 16 men killed &
wounded out of our company
4 of them ware kill & the rest
wounded babe Alley is Dead [2]
Jim i have bin on every
raid at the yankees has maid this
summer but I tell you I come
dam nigh going up the spout

it has bin the heardest campaign
i ever hav bin in &c Jim you
must do the best you can &
try & stay out of the army if
you can for it is a dam heard
place out here but I low to stay
in the army as long as the war
las if i dont get kill It is a
the yankees don a heep of dammage
when they maid that last raid
they broke some of the citizens
finly up they Just tore up every
thing that was in their House
& broke all the fine furniture
& Delf at was in they houses
Jim I saw that with my own
eyes I tell you Jim it was anough
to put the Devil in a man to
See how they Don but they Dident make
mutch after all old Hampton
pitch in to them & taken 25 Hundred
prisners & all their artillery &
waggons .&.c well Jim I want you
to write to me & lete me know how
you are geting along & let me know
if you have got any new brandy
maid or not .&. Jim tell Sarah I
want her to put me
a jar of brandy peaches a way for
me & keep them til I get home
I think I will get home between this
& next spring if I live [3]
