Biography: 

The Curtis family lived in the Hominy Creek section of Buncombe County. The Federal Census of 1860 lists Martha Curtis (b. ca. 1821) as a “widow on her farm.” Since the Census also indicates that she could not read or write, it is possible one of her children wrote the letter for her. Her sons, Benjamin F. Curtis (b. ca. 1842) and George W. Curtis (b. ca. 1844) , served as privates in Co. I, 25th NC Inf.
