The Shacklefords were originally from Virginia where David Shackleford was born ca. 1788. David eventually moved to Tennessee were son, George W. Shackleford, was born ca. 1819. At the time of the Federal Census of 1860, the Shacklefords were living in Asheville, where G. W. Shackleford was a successful stone mason. The family had moved to North Carolina sometime after the birth of daughter Margaret (b. ca. 1843).
