Camp near Winchester October the 19 1862
Dear father i take my pen in hand to drop you afew
lines to let you know that i am Well att this time
hoping When thes few lines coms to hand
they may find you well i hav not herd from home
in too months i hav no news of importance to wright
to you We hav been at this place ever since the fight [1]
We got marching order yisterday i do not think We
wil stay her much longer ther is a great deal talk of us going
to South carolina this winter but i think that talk
is all i think We Wil go back to raperhannock in a
Weak or too We cannot Stay hear much longer ther is
but verry litle to eat about hear We do not get
enough to eat We get beef and bread Without Salt
you may no it is poor eating We cannot bie eney thing
for we ar out of money and hav bin Without for some time
We hav not drawd eney money since last aprile every
thing sells high here We are nearly our of cloths but
for my part i hav got enough to do me til christmass
We ar begining to get Winter cloths and Shoos i got me a par
of Shoos i had to pay three dollars and a half for them, that
is cheap to What som sels at boots is Worth from teen
ty to fifty dollars We Wil get our unaform in a
Weak or too it Wil cost us eighteen dollars
it is what they call confederate cloth they ar rounda
bout coats our quarter master has Just com from richmon
With our money i recon We Wil get some money now
our unaform wil be hear to Knight they ar very
much needed for the weather is very cold this morning we
hav had some heavey frost for the last weak
troops ar mooving this morning i do not no wher
they are going Som ar gon to wards martins Burg they
ar Scatering the army to prevent Sickness

the Smalpalks is raging at Winchester ther is
too larg hospils ov Smallpocks ther We hav had one case
in our regt ment they ar getting Scatterd through the
ar my if they ar not stopt they wil be wors than the
yankees they send every man of that gets sick now
for they ar aferd that they wil get scaterd through
the army they ar giving the Sick fiurlows i herd that
James alewine hav got home i was glad to hear that he had
got home it was the first time that i hav herd from him
Since he got Wounded i Want him to Wright to me and let
me no how he is geting and how he enjoys him self since
he has got home i wold like to be ther to spree round with
him but i am aferd it wil be along time before i get the chance
to get ther i hav been verry lonsom since they all got woun
ded and went away for they was the ones that i staid with the
most ther is only four of the old peenis creek boys left We all
get along like brothers we hav had another election for lieutenent
We had four candidats Davis was elected i think we wil
have another election before long We ar going to runn S D Haden
the next time i want you to get me a par of boots and
hav them maid with pegs and send them With James alewine and
and i wold like hav a home maid over coat if i cold get it and i Want
a Wollen shirt and too or three pars of socks and hav me a hat maid
and send the[m] with James and send me som Brandy , and if you wil get
a power of attorney from the clerk of the cort and send to me i can
draw r P Boyds money and send it to you and tel mary a Boyd
to do the same i want you to rite to me soun as you get this and let me
no if you hav her[d] from J T Boyd Since grate Battle in Kentucky rite [2]
soon and giv me all the news and tell my friends to rite to me
i Wil half to bring my letter to a close for the want of somthing
