Mr. Boyd
Dear Sir
It becomes my painful
duty to announce to you the death of your
son a memeber of my company (G). He fell
on the battle of the 31st ult. nobly battling
for his country's rights. and yielded his
life a cheerful sacrifice on the altar of
his country. I deeply sympathize with
you in this bereavement. This was a noble
boy, and splendid soldier. He never
murmured let his duties be what they
might. He met the foe with soldier
like bearing and manliness, and fell
in the thickest of the fight. discharging
his duties with perfect coolness.
I was not permitted to visit him after
he fell, there being strict orders prohibit-
ing me, But he received as decent a bu-
rial as the place and circumstances
would permit. His personal affects he
had with him, and were interred

with him. His pay will be duly atten-
ded to, and full arrangements will be
made for your receiving it. I regret his
loss as a valuable member of my company
and hope you may receive consolation from
the Giver of all good. Again expressing my
sympathy I remain his captain
