Camp 7th South carolin regnt
May the 7th 1863
Dear father I hav the pleasure of riteing
afew lines to let you know that I am
still on the land of living and ar tolerable
Well at this time We have Just got back
from eight days hard marching and fight
ing the Seckond battle of the rappahannock [1]
had bin fought We hav Whipt the enemy at every
point our Brigaid Was not engaged only in
sker mishing our loss is very light We had
too men Wounded in our company N C
Mccury shot him self in the foot acci
dently J M Brooks Wounded With a
Shell can not giv no correct statement
about the Battle We hav taken a large num
ber of prisoners it is reported that General
Jackson is wounded and A P Hill and
Mc gowen ar Wounded the yanks
maid the poorest out at fighting that
ever don We drove them one knight a
four miles i never Saw yankees runn
before they Plunged into the river
Wher they com to it their Was a great meney
got drownded they left everything they had

knapsacks coffee shugar tea and most eney
thing that you can name We have gained
the greatest victory that bin gained since
the War commenced the prisners say that
they never intend to fight again there
time is out now they Was the Worst Scerd
men i ever Saw the loss on the enemies
side must hav bin heavy from the number
of prisoners We took Well i Wil not
try to give you a true Statement about
the fight We hav lost every thing We
had I lost my cloths but What I
hav on my back I Want you to Send me
som the first chance you hav a Shirt and
pair of drawers and socks for i dont no
when i can get eney hear the health of
our regment is goud and in fine Spirits
I Wil half to Close for the present
for i am very tyard of marching
I wil rite as Soon as i cant lern more
about the fight I thought I Wold rite a
little let you hav I coment I Want you
rite son as you can and give me of
the news ex cuse my short letter
nothing more at present but remand your Son
