Camp Peters Burg va
July the 7th 1864
Dear father I Seat my Self to drop
you a few lines to let you know
that I am tolerable well at this time
and hope When thes few lines coms to
hand they may find yow enJoying
the Same great Blessing the health of
the troops is not as good as it has
bin We hav a great deal of Sick ness hear
I hav not got much news to rite at
this tim We left chafins Bluff on the
17th inst and march to petersburg to meet
grant We met him in a mile of the
town We Went to Work on our breast Work
We Soon put them up but before we
got them don the yankes maid a charg
on part of our line We pourd a heavey
fire in to them and drove them back
their has bin several fights around hear
but our division has not bin engaged
every thing has bin quiet for severel days With
the exceptions of heavy Shelling and pick
et fighting Which has becom as coman as a

mans voice they hav bin Shelling
the town but they not don much damage
yet the citizens has moved out of
town to get out of the way of the Shells
they hav Wounded Som few Weman and
children it was thought that they wold
tare the place down on the fourth but we
Was deceived it Was the quietest day We
hav had Since we hav bin hear We hav
lost one man Since We come here he
Was wounded in the leg his nam is frank
edwards our lines is about four hundred
yards apart a man cant put his head abov
the breast Work without being shot at
by the Sharp Shooters they hav kild a
great meney of our men We pay them
back in the sam kind of coin our division has
bin resting for beter than a Weak We hav
bin runing after rading parties We hav
run them back to their gun boats
their is som talk of us goin on the
lins to knight but as for my part
I cant tell weather wil or not

I Saw John Logan car last weak he came
over to me too or three times before I
got See him he looks very and he Says
his healthy is very good he had bin in
the army two years his brothers is in the
Western army he is in co F eight ga
regment P fowler and J parnel is in
the same company I did not see them
he says his mother is living yet
Wils Mccoy is dead i be live them is all
that he mentioned We hav drawed money
I drawed one hundred and 71 dollars We
got too months Wages and clothing money
We did not get it befor we needed it I Was
out for the first tim Since i hav bin in
the army every thing is very high
hear flour 2 to 3 dollars a pound corn
meal $2 dollars a quart Bacon 8 dollars
per pound peas 2.50 a quart Beans 4
dollars a quart pies 50 cts a bite unions
1 dollar apeace and every thing elce in
perportion Whisky 3 dollars a drink

the Weather has bin very hot and dry
for the last month the crops is nearly
Burnt up in va if it dont soon rain they
Wont make seed in this contry corn looks
like it wold dry up in few days I am a
fraid We Will see harder times than We hav
ever saw yet the yankees has had our
rail roads tour up so the cars cold not run
We hav not had a mail in ten days We
Wil get the mail in day or tow I received
a letter from you about too Weaks a go I was glad
to hear from hom and to hear that you ar all wel
I want you to rite every chanc you hav and
let me no how you ar geting along With your
crop and how much Wheat oats you maid and
how crops looks and the price of pervisions
and the news in Jeneral We ar fairing
tolerble Well for Somthing to eat We get
corn meal Bacon coffee Shugar peas rice
Som times they hav cauld on us to help the
Sufferrers of peters Burg I though that I
it best to kep my money in my pack
I dont owe them eny thing I hav giv
my last to such folks
