Sulivan Island May 23rd
Dear Rachel,
I again take my
seat to drop you a few brief
lines hoping it may reach you
Enjoying the best of helth as for
my own part I am improoving
smartly I hope to be well in a
few day that is in body but
I am not in mine nor dont Expect
to be enny more Rachel as the
cours of events have separated us
for a time and perhaps wee may
never see each others face this side
of the grave, there fore I dislike
very much to right enny thing
that would hurt your feelings
and must forbear doing so in
our preant position but you
kno that I tried to give you
some of my vews and advise

while I was with you but it
seems that tha have bin so
soon forgoten or either ware never
lisen to, but weel leave this
subject a hope for the better
I cant say when I can come home
but am going try to come up on
the train Next saturday knight
a week an if I should git off
I would like if some one could
meet me the next morning
but I cannot be surtain about
this for there is no man nows
when he is going to git off until
the time comes but if eny of you
git sick and right to me that
you wish my attention theire
that might be a chance for me to
