Camp Gist James Island June the 30th 62
Dear Rebecca I this morning take my pen in
hand to drop you a fiew lines to let you now I
am well truly hoping thease may find you injoying
the same great blessing I have no nuse to write at
this time but I have concluded I had rather have some
cotten pants you rote to me you had me some
maid for me I had better have them if you can
get any one to bring them Wylis Watkins is
talking of coming to our company he will bring
them to me if this letter gets their in time but
do not start them by any one unless they ar coming
to charlston for a box will never get here unless
some one atends to it on the rode and tell them
to mark the box to Charlston if they mark to
this island it will never will come here their
has bin severl boxes lost by direct them to here
when they come to Charlston some of our wagons go to the city
evry day and bring the boxes when they are directed here they
come by a boat to fourt jonston or to dills bluff
and get misplased their is severl of us gowing to box
some things and send them home before long and I do not no
what to [send?] unless I new you would get the chance to send me
some more and what you was gowing to send I have five
pair of socks two pair pants two three shirts [and five?] vests
[????????] than I can cary if we have to [???????????] [1]

but if I had som cotten pants I would send some that
I have here I have bin thinking their would be some
chance to come home but I see no chance for it now
but will take it one of these days baybe. The nuse came [2]
last night that they were fighting near richmond
had captured 3500 prisoners the report saturday night
was that we had taken 75000. but it has come to 3500
the loss was great on both sides it may be some one
of our dear frends fell. I am ancious to here from them
you rote to me in your kind letter which I recived
friday eavning you wanted to kep one of those yearling
you can do so if you wont it and think their will be any
chance to winter it I though[t] as we was making no
crop it would be beter to get rid of them and
do the best you can with any thing we have for I am here
and and cant tell what is the best evy time and I will be
sati[s?]fed with your desision our wheat I can not tell you
what to do with it you can hire some one to hall it out
of the field do so and get it under a shelter somewhere
I supose their is enough of houses to hold it the old shuck
house will do it I recon and when thrashing time
comes get some one to thrash it but if you can make
any other araingements do the best you can and I will
be satisfied I will close by saying I remain your
true loving Husband untell deth William
