Dear cousen
I embrace the
present in dropping you a few
lines to inform you that I
am unwell at this time and
have been for some time past
though I am able to walk a
bout some when not too hot
for a weak person to be out
But I think if the Yanks should
happen to reach here I would
feel strong and do all I could
to Subdue them We are not
very well fixed here yet though
we have done a good eal of
work here and I expect we will
have to do a sight more yet
Well Hannah I must tell
you that our company shows

off so well in appearance and
in drilling that the privates
are styled higher by the people
than commissioned officers are
in the light infantry here
We all get along very well
in this company to be made
up of so many counties
We have men from Anson
county Chatham Randolph
Davidson Cabarras Macklingburg
Lincoln Catawba Iredell and
Gaston and some from South
Carolina There is some of our
men in the hospital but
I am inhopes they will come
out soon, as they are im
proving fast They only send
such as wont take medicins
according to directions to the
Hospital We can be cured

just as well here as there
if we will manage right
We have very good water
here to be in a sandy
country and on the coast
We have the pleasure of See-
ing the boats pass up and
down the river every day
There is one steamer employ
ed in bringing provisions
from Newburn down here
which comes three or four
times a day We are at fort
lane about two and ahalf miles
below Newburn our force
here is only about two
thousand men So I must
close Please excuse my bad
writing as you know our
chance Give my best re-
spects to all the ladies
