Friends at Home
I seat myself this
evening to write you a few
lines to let you know that
I am well & hope you are
the same the box came
here the 26th I was out
on Picket when it came
& have just got in the 28th
the things came in good shape
there was one Pie broke & one
cake that is all there was
nothing frose everything was
fresh & nice Marthas Pie
was good that cheese was nice
& them cakes was nice to I had
fish & potatoes for supper
I was satisfied with every thing
[?????] [1] just suited me

we got one Rebel while
on Picket there was two
more out there they kept in
the woods & watched no there
was two of us an past Mr Ellis
was with me we kept behind
a great rock so they could
not see us to shoot us we
could hear them talk quite
plain the woods was not more
than five rods from us
they found they could not get
a shot at us & they left before
morning we have not been
paid of[f] yet but expect the
Pay masters every day if we get
Paid before March we shall
get [paid soon?] Mr Lisherness
& Sam Emery [2] have come to this 
regt. They got here testerday
the health of the regt is good
it is as warm here as it is

in July down there
tell Martha I am much
obliged to her for that Box
& I will come & see her
when I come home
& Mrs Davis tell her I am
much obliged for them cabbage
heads they are nice ones
I am going to boil them to morrow
& will think of her when I
eat them I cant write any
more now I have lugged
my Knapsack 8 miles today
& I am tired so I will close
with soon from your Son
