Battery B. Belfast Feb. 28,
Dear Brother
I now seat
myself to answer your
kind letter that I received
last weeak.
you still improve
in writeing and I am veary glad
to see it, and hope you will
try harder then ever before.
Wednesday March 1, 1865
I commenced this letter
to you yesterday but did
not write but a few lines for
I had to get reddy for
inspection and Muster for pay.
you see we are Mustered
for pay the last day of every

two months.
our Capt Conant has
gone to Augusta he is
sitting on a courtmarshal.
our Le ient Smiley leaves
us this morning for fort
Nox it is 17 miles from
here and is on Penobscot river. [1]
he is ordered thare to take
command of the fort.
I do not know how long
he will be gone, but hope
he will be back soon.
our two Sergeants left
us last eve to go home on a
furlough. so that Battery B.
is now under the command
of Corporal Eldridge a good
fellow. and both of the Batterys
are under the command
of Le ient Keyes he was over
here yesterday & I like him veary
much.

to day is the first day
of Spring & it is veary
warm but cloudy.
Sunday it rained veary hard
here. I went on inspection
Sunday & was excused from
the next guard duty for having
the cleanist gun. I tell you
we had a good time last
weeak. last weeak Wednesday
we fired 17 guns Canon at Battery B.
& thay wer also fireing at Battery A.
it was in honor of the birth
of Washington and the late
Victoryes. last eve I went
out to one of the Neighbours
and maid a call. I am going
over to the City to morrow.
last weeak I sent for five
Dollars. I have got to buy me
a lot of writeing paper &
Stamps. I suppose we get
20 dollars a month now.

we have had goodnews
lately & if Sherman keeps
marching on we will soon
have better. I want you & Abby
& Martha to have your pictures
taken. & I should like to
have the others. be sure
& have some good ones & send
them to me for I want them.
have some large ones taken.
have them taken to gather
if you want to I suppose
you are going to School
now& having a good time
I want you to Study veary hard.
Wallace likes quite well.
Fitzroy is all wright.
I have not wrot to Jonathan
yet does he live in the same
place. we have got a plenty of Snow.
