Biography: 

W. Frank Cox (Nov. 28, 1843 – April 21, 1926) was a farm laborer from Norway, Oxford County, Maine. His name is listed as Francis W. Cox in the 1860 Census. He mustered into service as a private in Co. H, 23rd Maine Infantry. This regiment was consolidated with the 32nd Maine Infantry and Cox served as a corporal in Co. B before mustering out on December 12, 1864. The letters in this collection are addressed to his brother, Edwin A. Cox (b. ca. 1849). Their father, William Cox, was a farmer, and there were six children in the family. By the time of the 1880 Census, Frank W. Cox (as listed in the 1880 Census and on his tombstone) was a farmer married to Catherine (Noyes) Cox, and they were parents of two children.
