  Berryevill.V.A. Sept 7th 1864 Dear Sister                   Last night we got a mail and I wase very much pleased to find that
the wase a couple of letters for me  one wase written by Mother and julia Aug 28th and the other by Abby Aug 29th and wase very glad to hear frome you all. and Abbys letter come in good time to just five dollars in it. I have had to beg all the tobacco that I have had for a good while I went and bought a pound the first thing this morning we are enjoying ourselves in great shape camped in a [page 2] little piece of woods and well fortified the night that we got here we worked all night throwing up breast works we get along well we haint had eny fighting yet  I thought the other day though that it wase shurly a comming  thay touck us out two Brigades in all and marched around in the woods and fields and formed into line of battle about a half a dozzen times and the Rebbles run for good I didet see eny of them but I herd a few balls whize eling over head I began [page 3] to think that we should have a chance at them but it seames as though the wase some overruling power watching us we have always got just about so near then something happen to put a stop to it and I hope it will always bee so for I aint very particker about seeing them                     Sept the 8th [1] All is is well as yet them you want to know if I got them envelops paper and stamps and I did a good while ago and wrote the same day as the next and you [page 4] dident get the letter I gess. I got them the night before we started on this march  Nancy wrote to me sometime ago and said that Chancey Turners wife wanted some to write and let her know whare her Brother wase and you tell Nancy to tell her to direct just the same as you direct to me onley to company G insted of K he is in this Regement I am a going to hall up now for this time write as often as possible this frome your        Brother Jairus [2] PS I forgot to tell you that I am well but it would been all the same you know I allways am Jairus
