Biography: 

James B. Lovering (b. ca. 1842) was a laborer from Shirley Village, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. At the time of the 1860 Census, his parents, Jonas and Rebecca Lovering, and six of their children (ages 6-16) resided near Harvard, Massachusettes in neighboring Worcester County. James Lovering mustered into service as a private in Co. H, 23rd Massachusetts Infantry on August 8, 1862 and mustered out on October 13, 1864. In 1870 James and his young wife, Sarah, resided in Harvard, Massachusetts, where James worked in a blacksmith shop.
