Newbern N C april 20th [1862]
dear wife i Received a Letter from you Last night dated
the 14th i was glad to here from you i have written three
or four Letters Lately and i expect that you have got them
By this time and the monney to and the Box i dont know of much
to write now the wether is hot and Sultry we have not
had any Rain for Sum time you Stateted that Mrs Stockman
had Ben in to See you her husband is a comeing home very
Soon Ed gurney is a Coming home to on a furlough
he has Been Sick for Some time in the hospittal he
aint Been worth ten Cents Since he has Been out
here i Suppose that he will tell a good manney Lies that
is the Style of the gurneys our Reg is small now and it
Said that we will have to go Back to the City and
Let a full Reg take our Place that the way we
have to Be Pushed about in Camp Life first in
one Place then in another i have got about Sick of
it our Companey was on Picket yesterday and to day
the 24th Pickets had a Brush with the Rebels But
we have not heard wether they kiled anny or not
our Boys had a Large Lot of Boxes Come the other

day from N P and ipwich i Suppose that there has
Been a fight at yorktown By this time and i hope that
the Rebels will get Routted and get this war Setled
up Cant you Send me Some Postage Stamps i Cant get
none out here that is a Prettey Scrape that ike hale
has got into he had ought to Be tared and Feathered
that So well i wont write anny more to night
i will wait til moring so good night monday
moring it is dull this morning Looke Like Rain the
woods have Been on fire all night around our Camp
this Pitch Pine Burns awfully the magor got the
Regiment out to Put the fire out the Rebels Set
a good manny fires they are great fools it dont
hurt us anny Speaking of the magor he is a first
Rate man he is in Command of the Reg now the
Col gone i hope he will always Be in Command
i Suppose that the Col is in Boston By this time i wish
i was to well it will Come all Right By and By
we have our Battalion drils in the moring Before
the Sun gets up the Reg is Just a going on drill
i hope that i Shall get a Letter from you this week

John merill has not got any Papers from his wife for
Long time But we all have to Lose more Les Pape[r]
or Letters But i dont See why i wrote to mother the
other day i thought it would Please her give my Love
to all the folks and kis the Children for me
