Biography: 

Joseph Barlow (b. ca. 1834) was an Essex County, Massachusetts shoemaker. At the time of the 1860 Federal Census, he and his wife, Ellen (b. ca. 1835), were living in Newburyport in the household of George Bellows, a ship carpenter. The Barlows were parents of two small daughters, Nellie and Elisabeth. Joseph Barlow first served in Co. A, 8th Massachusetts Infantry, a three-month regiment. He later served in Co. I, 23rd Massachusetts Infantry and rose to the rank of sergeant.
