Dear wife i
will now Pen you a Line or two
two Let you know how and where
i am we have got Back once
more to Newbern a Joyfull day
for us But i have not had a
Chance to write Before for
as Soon as we got here we
was orderd off to Little washing [1]
ton to help drive the Rebels off
gen Foster had Run the Blockade
and got to Newbern the day
Before we got in the gen was
highly Pleased to See his old Sol
diers Back again well we
had a hard and Long March
to washington But no fighting
the Rebels Left the Batterys
they are afraid of Foster

9th New Jersey 21 Newyork
and 98 th New york Came with
[?] gen Hickmans Brigade we
had a Rough Pasage up the
Coast a great deal of Sea Sicknes
on Board i was a Little Sick
and a good Part of our Company
we Came on the Steammer
unnited States the gen and
Staff was on Board well
we arrived all Safe at Beuafort
and took the Cars for Newbern
and we are encamped near
our old Place of Last year But
i dont know how Long we
Shall Stoop here there is talk
of our going in to the City
again i hope we Shall But
we Cant tell there is So
manny Stories flying around
Camp well i hope you
have got the monny

i Suppose that your Last Letter
have gone to Port Royal but
they will Be Sent Back
to Newbern i Long to get a
Letter from you to know
how you are Capt Hobbs
is out here a Speculating
on Conton he Looks quite
natural this Place has got
to Be a yankee City gen
Foster has drove all the Rebels
out of the Place and more
go to day out into the Rebels
Lines that the way to deal
with them there is a Plenty
of union fal familys to
take the honor about
fifteen familys Came from
Elisabeth City yesterday all
union the Place is Burnt
up i must write more
