Newbern N C June 29th [1862]
Dear Wife
your Letter of the third and
[M?]other of the 9th Aunt Nelson of the 8th Came
to hand Last night and i was Glad to get one for
i have not got any Letters for a good while i have
Been very anxious about you and now i am glad you
have got along So well But what in time did you
go to draging with mothers things for you ought
to Be more Carfull But i Can tell you that i am
Pleased that you have got a Boy and you want
a name well i will tell you what he must Be
Called i want him named after my general So you
Can Call him Everet Burnside Barlow and i
know it will Please you Perhaps the gen
will give him a Presant oh how i Should Like to
Se him you must Send his Pitcture as Soon
as you get able John Merrill Says that
he should name a Child after Burnsides Before
anny other man that So while i am writeing
the Regt is forming on the St to go to
Church and the Band is Playing Splendid But
i Cant go to day for i feell Some Sleappy i
have Ben on Gaurd the Last twenty four
hours and my Little toe is Sore dont Laugh
at me We have a hundred and Sixty men
from the Regt every day gaurd mounting
is in front of our quarters every morning
i wish you Could Se it once it is Splendid
the men all in Line the officers inspecting
the mens muskets to See if they are Clean
and in good order we have dres Parade
at Six every night and we have got
one of the Best Bands in the army

on Friday there was a Great time here all the
Troops in this department wher Revied By gen Burnsi
des and Foster and the Adgt. general of Rode island
He Brought a Sword that the State of Rode island
got up for Burny and it was Presentted to him on
the field i wish you Could have Seen the gen he
Looks So handsome with his Brigand hat on and
his Staff all around him we Cant help Loveing
him well it is hot to day But we have had
a plenty of Rain to the next Payment will Be
the first of July and then i will Send Some more
mony i expcte that there will Be a Big time
here on the fourth of July if we are here if
we didnot have any Children i Should have
you out here Some of the men have Sent for
there wives for they Can do well here they
want females in the hospitals But So Be it
i dont See where dades Letters got to i Sent
a Letter to Mr Fogg and Charly Hopkinson
the other day i did not know this Caleb
Hase But i Should Like to Shoot him did
you get that Pitcture of Burnside that i Sent
i Should Like one or two more Stamps if
Can Send them well i will Close give my
Love to mother and Father aunt and Hattie
and every Body in general kis the Baby
a hundred times for me tell Nelley that
there is a Little girl out here that Looks
Like her and i Play with her Because
She is So much Like my Nelley write
as often as you Can from your
Husband Joseph Barlow
