John R. Houpt
John R. Houpt (b. ca. 1841) was a carpenter and farmer from Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He mustered into service with Co. A, 101st Pennsylvania Infantry on Nov. 15, 1861 and was discharged for wounds (a gunshot wound through the abdomen and left breast) received at Fair Oaks, Va. May 31, 1862. Other soldiers thought he was dead and loaded him onto a barge with hundreds of dead soldiers. The next morning, Lt. (later Col.) James Sheafer went to check the bodies for soldiers from Co. A and found Houpt alive. He was admitted to the hospital for four months, survived the war, and lived to be 70 years old. He was survived by his wife, three sons, and five daughters.
