Monday October 20 1862
Dear frend i take this present opper
tunity to informe you that i am we[ll]
at present and hope that these
few lines may find you in the
same state of health  we are in
Maryland Washington Co  we are
here sins we came to the reg
we got here on the 8 of October from
Alixsander [1] here i have bene trea
ded wel sins i am here Alixsander
and Washington was the worst place
i met with that is the poorest
treadment   we are treaded wel
here  we have plenty to eat and
drink we get fresh beef most

every day and two or three times
a weke pork and eligent water
here a spring that d[r]ives a saw mil  
we have nothing to Complain of
i have not bene sory yet that i
Listed but I wod advise no man
to List without he must for I
dont think that they are triing to
end this war  the solgers tels me  
that they bene throug near al
Verginia and the war was in no
neer to an end then when they
first starded  when the head men  
has there pockets ful wost then
it wil soon end  i hav saw  
solgers and reg after reg sins I
left Hares burg and al out here
i may Cast my eyes most anywhere
i wil I can se regments of solgers  
they bene Liing here sins th 17 [2]
of September  i dont think that
Jackson has his reg liing so long

at one plase or he wod not come
into Merland so often but one  
thing serten he went out with
a great Los  this Bregate is Cut
up very bad  I am in General [3]
riget  Division and Hookers [4] Cor
and Dura Brigade [5] I have bene
on picket and on gard wonst
sins I am here I saw Jacob Miller  
the other day from Columbia that
was the first man that I saw that
i node sins I am here  he h[ere?]d of
me and he came to se me he  
hered of me by one that came on the
cars with me of that reg  he told me
that he got a lettor from  
Elizabeth  she told him  
that the last she hered of me
i was in Harrisburg  that was
the first that I herd from home
sins I left yester day i got
a letter from my brother it was

Prescot and i got it from ther
but I expect one from home
now every day I never had them
directed rite  Dear frend rite some
and tel me how thing is at home
and how the Crops is and al
in quiring frends  it is getting
dark and I must bring my Letter
to a Close we expect to get
paid th 15 of next month and then
i shal sent you som mony a
again  the post stamps is scarce
here i generly pay my Letters but
i have no stamps now no more at  
present  rite soon  Direct your
Letter to Jacob B. Haws 107 reg
