Biography: 

Joseph W. Hughs (b. ca. 1831) was a farmer from Smith County, Mississippi. Both he and his wife, Martha (b. ca. 1835) were born in Alabama. At the time of the 1860 Census, the couple owned a small farm (valued at $700) and were parents of three young children, Mary A. (7), Leona J. (5), and Richard C. (4). Joseph Hughs served as a private in Co. H, 30th Mississippi Infantry. He was captured at Lookout Mountain on November 24, 1864 and died of pneumonia at Rock Island prison camp on January 18, 1864.
