Dear friend I wrote to you some few weeks
since that I was at this place sick I have now recovered my usual
health I expect to leave for Gordors ville in a few days, as our Regment
is in that neighborhood. I havent heard from Thadeous since I last
wrote to you, I have not heard whether my little crop of wheat turned
out any thing or not. if it is worth getting out you can have it cleaned
out and ground and if you want the Flour you can take it at what it is worth and give me credit for it the dark flour and offel you can let
my negros have for themselves and stock. I want to go home the
first opertunity I wish to see you all very much. I have not been in any
battle yet but dont know how soon that I may be. I cant give you any
reliable information about the late battle fought near Gordonsville
Tell Parry & Van that I was on Picket the last of July below Malvin
hill near James River in two hundred yards of the Yankee lines. I
was ¼ of a mile frome any other Videt, and stood two hours one very dark
night and listened to the music on the Yankey gun boats which kept
me frome being loansome. I stood the next day at the same place
I had not been their very long before I saw five of the enemy passing
along their lines, about one hundred & fifty yards frome where I was
I had dismounten and tide my horse in a bottom where they could not
see him and I went up on a hill near by & set in the bushes & watch
ed them they did not se me I had orders not to shoot unless they
advanced on me so they passed on without knowing that I was
their., Give my love to your lady & family. also to your
Brother Wm & family & olde Mrs Stinson & Mrs Adcock, also
to my servants., I have nothing more to write you of interest
at this time I will try and write to you again soon
