Biography: 

John R. Womack (b. ca. 1838) was a Choctaw County farmer. He enlisted in August 1861 and served in Co. G, 5th Mississippi Infantry, along with his uncle and cousin, M. S. Womack ,Sr. and Jr. He is listed absent sick from June 1862 through all of 1863 and was eventually dropped from the rolls of that regiment. Meanwhile, he had enlisted in Co. D, 8th Mississippi Cavalry in September 1863 and was taken prisoner at Ripley, Mississippi on December 4. He was confined at Alton, Illinois and later at Fort Delaware. He was released on June 11, 1865.
