Camp Near Franklin Depot
Southampton Cty Va January 17th 1863
Dear friend I once more have the opportunity of
droping you a few lines to inform you that I
am well Greatly hoping when these lines
reaches you may find you all injoying the best
of health I received a letter from Sanders the 14
of January and he was well as common an he says
that the Patrick men has no chance in that reg
ment and he seens to think they are no chance
for hime to come an join our company but I
hopep that we will Get him with us yet we are
all agoing to doe all we can I think we can
Swop for him if the officers is willing I have
not got narry [???] from you Since I left the
Narrows but I hope to Get one son I dont no
when I will come home but when I come I will
bring them things you wort for me to bring let
it be long or Short if I can get them I am glad
to hear of the wedding but I am a fraid she is
a going to doe bad business tel Mary that she
had better wait for me we have had some
very hard marching to doe since we left the
Narrows [We?] havent stayed more than four
Days in a place since we come down hure we
have been in 25 miles of Norfolk since weve
been down hure I am not satisfide hure in this
Country it is so flat and swampy one of our [regment?]
has got the smallpox now and if we stay hure

long w will all be Sick in the
Spring for the water is very bad we have
beef and pork and Sweet potatoes and some
pickel pork but nun of these things makes
me like this country I hope we will g oback
to the Narrows in the Spring and then
I think we can all come home once more Thos
Smith and Daniel is well I want you to answer
this letter as soon as it comes to hand and give
me all the best news you can Direct you
