Camp near Corinth Mississippi
May the 28th / 62
respected parents
i accept the present opportunity of writing you a few lines in
great haste to inform you that i am well hoping these lines
may reach and find you well i wrote you a letter 2 days ago
and gave you the most of the news but as mister Jones
is here i will drop you a few lines more we are still
camped &lt 3?&gt &frac12 miles of Corrinth and are preparing every
day for the battle they keep us so busy that we
havent time to write i commenced writing
yesterday but was called out to cut the timber
down in front of us our breast works are
partly on a very large farm and a part in the
woods they extind along the entire line which
is 20 miles long they is about 100 acres in
the farm that we are camped by the entrenchmets
goes right through it and every rail is
[page 2]
pretty plenty for the most of it was newly
cleared we have cut every tree and every
bush on several acres in front of us so that
the artillery can have fair play if we get
defeated in the pending battle it will not
be on account of not making good preparations
we think if we gain this battle that
we will get to see some satisfaction I
want you to send me that light colered
hat of mine by the first one that comes here
for it is so hot that a cap is not much
servic we are expecting to draw our pay to day
or to morrow if we are not called away i will
draw six months wages and shall send it
to Moses Grasley (by Wm Jones) i made arrangements with
him about it when i was at home I must
close for i want to write another letter to day yours as ever
(please write soon) G. W. Jarrett
