George W. Jarrett Letters

G. W. Garrett [sic] letters, Civil War Document Collection

Private George W. Jarrett was born on November 3, 1842 in Jackson County, Missouri, the son of David and Jennie Light Jarrett,  who had moved to Missouri from Virginia in 1841. After his father’s death in 1845, Jarrett’s mother married William H. Johnson, and they moved to Randolph County, Indiana.  George W. Jarrett mustered into service as a private in Co. E, 57th Indiana Infantry on December 21, 1861.  He served three years before he was shot in the left hip and had a bullet graze his forehead at the battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864.  He was taken to a hospital and was later found among 2000 wounded after the Union army forced the Confederates to retreat after the battle of Nashville. Because of his wounds, Jarrett was discharged as a Veteran on May 15, 1865.  Jarrett returned to Indiana where he married Annie C. Harris on October 5, 1865.  They had two children, Clara A., born April 30, 1867 and Ward, born December 20, 1868.  George Jarrett attempted farming after the war but became permanently disabled from his wound and died of heart disease at Winchester, Indiana on June 12, 1903 at 60 years of age. He is now buried in the Buena Vista Cemetery in Randolph County, Indiana.
