D. W. Phillips Letters

Dennis W. Phillips (b. ca. 1833) was farmer from Carnesville, Franklin County, Georgia. He served as a private in Co. F, 37th Georgia Infantry. This small collection consists of one letter from Phillips to his wife, Sarah (b. ca. 1836), and one letter from Sarah to Dennis. At the time of the 1860 Federal Census Dennis and Sarah were parents of one-year-old Wiley. Servuce records indicated that Dennis W. Phillips was wounded and taken prisoner on December 16, 1864 at the Battle of Nashville, and that his left leg was amputated three days later. Phillips was released at Louisville, Kentucky on June 17, 1865 after taking the oath of allegiance.
