William S. Shockley Papers, 1861-1864

William S. Shockley (b. ca. 1829) was a Jackson County, Georgia farmer. At the time of the 1860 Federal Census, Shockley and his wife, Eliza (b. ca. 1832), had four young children. W. S. Shockley served as a private in Co. C, 18th Georgia Infantry. He was taken prisoner at Cold Harbor, Virginia on June 1, 1864 and died of pneumonia at Elmira prison camp on February 5, 1865.
