William M. Batts Letters, 1861-1862

William M. Batts (b. ca. 1838) belonged to a prosperous Lee County, Georgia family. His father John Batts (b. ca. 1815) was a planter and slave-owner. William Batts enlisted as a private in Co. A, 12th Georgia Infantry in June 1861 and was killed at the Battle of Cedar Run, Virginia on August 9, 1862.
