Austin Brown Letter

Austin Brown (b. ca. 1828) was a farmer from Johnston County, North Carolina and served in Co. F, 13th Battalion NC Light Artillery and in Co. H, 3rd NC Artillery. The following letter was apparently written before he was in the Confederate Army and was written to his brother, Barden Brown, and to his friends, Ruffin Bailey (b. ca. 1825) and Lanfair Bailey (b. ca. 1835). The Baileys and Barden Brown served together in Clark’s Special Battalion, NC Militia. Lanfair Bailey later served with Austin and Barden Brown and two of their brothers in Co. H, 3rd NC Artillery.
