[this letter was written for Leonard Alman by his friend and former neighbor, Caleb S. McCurdy, a private in Co. K, 28th NC Infantry. The 28th NC was in the same brigade (Branch’s) as Almon’s regiment]
Camp of the 28 7 NC troops 8 Miles North E of
Richmond va June the 8 1862 Dear wife your
Kind letter of the 23 May is duly to hand it found
me in good helth I was truly glad to heare that you
was well. they boys Generly in camp is well we are
on the left wing of Generl Johnsons army the lines
of battle is a bout 15 miles long theare has bin
more or less fighting a bout 6 Miles below us on this
line for more then a weak back our troops have
bin Successful So far in driving the enemy back our
Regt havent had any fighting to do Since we have bin
in Va though I dont know how soon we weill have
it to do. we are Redy at any time we are cald on
You Spoke Something a bout my cloths I Sent 1 Shirt 1 Peare Pants
& drawers 1 cap gloves & Neck handkerchief in 2 coats

& one good Claw hammer one led Pencil they was
all put in D. P. Bojjars box. when you go after them take
this letter with you for I have namd all the artickles in
it that I Sent to you Try & do the best you can
to Save our crop you spoke Said you would be glad
to Se me at home I would be very glad to get home but
thare is no chance for a man to get any furlowes at
this time nor I dont expect theare will be eny chance
soon without times gets better. I Close write often
