camp near Gordonsvill
August 13 1862
Dear wife I take the
present opertunity of writing
you A few lines in answer
to your kind letter which
came to hand A few days
ago and I was glad to hear from
you and to hear that you
was well and doing well
these few lines leaves
me in good health only
almost traveld down
we have had aprety hard
time of it for several
days we went up above
orange cour house and had
A brush with the yankeys
but we soon cleand them
out we lost three or four
hundred men the yankeys

in killed and wounded
and prisioners our company
did not loose aman
nor no one wounded
except Joshua Hartsel [1] he
got wounded in hand
Brother Monroe Linker [2]
is not very well but he
is still Able to go about
the rest of the boys is
tolerable well I bring
my few lines to a close by
asking you to write soon
and give me all the news
give my best respects to
all inquireng friend I remain
