March the 24, 1863 Camp Vance
Dear Wife
I am hapy to in form you
that I am well at pres ant except
a vary bad cole John Bradshaw is
well John queary is well but
our company in jineral is not
well serverel of them has got
the mumps Goodman Paterson is
in the hospitel at Peters Burg Va
yet I have not heard from him
sence we left Weldon we have
three Boys at weldon yet in the
hospitle But I think tha will
get well in a weak or so th balance
of our boys ar all in the camp
we left weldon last Friday eavening
and landed next morning in golds B
we then stayd in Goulds burrow
untill twelve a clock and then
we went out a bout a mile from
town struck up camp and we are
here yet but I dont now how
long we will stay here we may
leve here be fore knight or we
may stay here a weak or two we
are looking fur an atact at two
places Kingston [1] and Willmington 
thare are eighteen thousand troop
of our men at Kingston now
and a bout three thousand here
at Goldsburrough reddy to go to
kingston ore Willmington the
nuse last knight was that

we was a going to re take Nubern
this weeak but I dont think
it is so I dont thin that
our forces will attact them thare
so I dont know when we will
fite I saw James Miller and Litton
Baker and Noey Baker all in
Golds burrough Litton Baker is
wating on the sick here after
the fite at Nubern tha sent
all the sick to Goldsburroug
we understand that we lost a
bout 400 men at the fite of the
wonded kild and taking prisner
all to gether and we kild
a bout 1500 of the yankeeys
this is thare report tha would
not let our men go a near
then to bery the ded when
our men went back to
them with a flag of truce
tha told them that tha had
beryed all the ded and would
not let them in Pals Lorance
is in Golds burroug he is wonded
in the for head but not so bad
but what he will get well
I heard from Edward Gaultney
he was thare but did not get
hert Dear Wife I hope the few
lines may find you all well
tell Mary that John is on gard
to day I have just finished
poleesing the streets and have
had but little time to writ the lette
