Camp. Brooks, Adams Run
Aprile the 30th 1862
Dear father & Mother brothers & sisters
it is with pleasure that I seat my self
to let you know that I am well at
this time hoping that those few lines
when comes to hand may find you all
well I have nothing of intrust to rite
to you but I thought that I would drop
you a few lines to let you know that
I was wll as I had a chance to send it
home by hand lieut wat kins going start
home in the morning also capt shoemate
we have all volenteerd for the war &
reorganised owr officers is capt W L Hudgens
1st lieut M W Henderson 2nd Lieut I N Cooper
2nd 2nd or 3rd Lieut H Y Fuler
none of them had any opinant but
the capt Lieut wood run against
him he got 18 votes while Hidgens
got 46 I coll him pretty bad beat
I dont know how the election went
in the others compnoys capt irly
was beat for capt in his companey
Lieut John A anderson & muckerson
tied so there will be another Race
so I will change my subgect & tell you of the

we had a little battle here yestoday the yankeys
come up edisto river & went up to pine burg &
fired on the batery & our detachment returned
it same way they kept the fire about too hours
they yankeys hit the breastworks several times
our shot till their ameunition giv out
& then left the canon & as son as they
left the yankeys came out & cut down
canon and burnt the carage and spiked
the gins and left as son as posible
our men hit the ship several times when
the balls would strike here they coud see
fire fly from her our men came through
safe no one of them got hurt by this time
the tide was down so that they had to
stay ttill it rize by this time is was
knight the wahington artilery met them at
the fery down at the lagree house below the
fery they came singing and full of life
just as they got aganst them they artilery
had 4 pecises & let slip at them &
they said bring out lo[n]g tom and man
him well give them grape & canerster we
fired on them again and the they slo
holowed out put up steam put up
steam & they heard some men on bord
Cry o lordy i am hurt they sad that

it is suposed that they hert her
right smart this was done and none
of our men still hurt they all landed
back here safe so that is about all it
father I have no idea when we wll leave here
there is no talk of moveing now I think
we will have to stay here a good while yet
the health of the camp is prety bad but
is bad cases they all keep up but still not
well I my self have been well up to the
this time I received your leter that you sent
by John pitts was glad to hear that you was
all well tteell mama that I would like
to see her the best in the world but it
is impossble for me to come home now but
I will come as soon as I can let it be
long or short you said that you sent me
some things by John but he told me that
he left them there for he cold not fetch
them I want you to have my pistole fixed
and send it to me I sent it up by Mr
[still?] so I must come to a close so
rite son as you get this and let me
know how you all are I have volenteered for
the war and I dont know when I can come home
so fare weell for the preasant tame
