Biography: 

John M. Culbertson (b. ca. 1820) was a farmer from Laurens District, South Carolina. At the time of the 1860 Census (the name is spelled Culberson in the Census), he and his wife, Susan (b. ca. 1823) were living on their farm with six children. The oldest, Thomas Hiram Culbertson (b. ca. 1843) served as a private in Co. C, 3rd Battalion South Carolina Infantry (Lauren’s) (James’), a unit made up primarily of soldiers from Laurens District. He enlisted on December 2, 1861 and died of erysipelas in a Richmond hospital on or about December 7, 1862.
