J. M. Culbertson Papers, 1862-1865
John M. Culbertson (b. ca. 1820) was a farmer from Laurens District, South Carolina. At the time of the 1860 Census (the name is spelled Culberson in the Census), he and his wife, Susan (b. ca. 1823) were living on their farm with six children. The oldest, Thomas Hiram Culbertson (b. ca. 1843) served as a private in Co. C, 3rd Battalion South Carolina Infantry (Lauren’s) (James’), a unit made up primarily of soldiers from Laurens District. Thomas enlisted on December 2, 1861 and died of erysipelas in a Richmond hospital on or about December 7, 1862. This collection consists of letters written by John M. Culbertson to his son, Thomas, and from Thomas to his father. There are also letters written by various relatives serving in the Confederate Army.
