John Freeman (b. ca. 1855) was from a farm family in Pickens District, South Carolina. He had four siblings: William T. (b. ca. 1842), Mary E. (b. ca. 1844), Anna (b. ca. 1849), and Elizabeth Jane Martin (b. ca. 1846). His eldest brother William T. served and died in the Confederacy. His father also served in the Confederacy at the end of the Civil War.
