Charles (b. ca. 1844) was from a farm family in Pickens District, South Carolina. Charles had seven siblings, and his parents were John and Mary Dalton. He served in Co. F, 1st Regiment, Orr's Rifles, South Carolina Volunteers. He served with several of his brothers, Andrew Jackson (b. ca. 1839) and Jesse (b. ca. 1841). He also served with William T. Martin (b. ca. 1842), a neighbor and friend. Charles seems to have been similarly sick alongside William T. Martin in a Richmond, Virginia hospital when William died in August 1862. It is not clear if he survived the war.
