May 4th 1863
Dear Father
Having benn
ingaged with the enemy for [1]
two days and beleaving you
would bee glad to know
how we all come out
I now seize a few moments
to address you but being
very mutch fartiged I exsp
-ect to bee verey short I will
now proceed to give you
caswalitites 1st Private C. H.
Hunter killed Dead on the
field while we were char-
-ging a yankee Battry
Sergt W. T. Keaton wounded
in right Arme Corple
John. S. Withrow wounded

wounded in the Hand Private

verey bad wound Private

finger shot off I suppose
several more was slitley
wounded but are with the
company now I will give

Caffey Jacob Mitchell
John. .A. McCurdy Josiah
Estes & W. G. Austin our
company fought yesterday and
day before and are still in
Line of Battle within site
of the enemy we all need
sleepe and reast as we
havent had any in four days and nights

Father I am happy to say
to you that we have whiped
the yankees badley at ever
pointe our own Division
Day before yesterday evning
attacked the yankees and
Drove them before us like
chaf for some three or four
mils captured several battrys
and took several Prisners
all so got Plenty rations
wich we verey readly
exsepted I am not prepard
to tell you any thing about
the nomber killed on [other?]
side but am satestfied that
the enemy loss was much
grater than ours in all
we drove the enemy some
six mils and the Dead yankees
are Laying thick all over that ground

Jacob is at Guinea Station
sick he was not in the fight
Father I do not know
Whether you can read this
or not I am in awfull
bad fix for writing I will
write to you a gane when
ever I can so excuse
me this time
your true son untill
Death so good by to all
