Jason Hurd (1834-1887) was the son of Isaac and Lucretia Hurd, who owned a farm in Southington, Trumbull County, Ohio. Jason enlisted on September 15, 1861 in Co. G, 19th Ohio Infantry as a Sergeant and eventually rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He mustered out on October 24, 1865. The regiment was involved at the Battles of Shiloh and Nashville, and the pursuit of Hood to the Tennessee River, among others. Jason and his borther, Frank Hurd (b. ca. 1845), were both married and operating their own farms at Southington at the time of the 1870 Census. The family name is spelled “Herd” in the 1860 Census.
