Biography: 

William Ellis (b. ca. 1845) was from Marseilles, Wyandot County, Ohio. He mustered into service as a private in Co. A, 123rd Ohio Infantry on August 14, 1862. William Ellis was captured at Winchester, Virginia on June 15, 1863, exchanged, and mustered out on June 12, 1865. The letters in this collection were written to his widowed mother, Mary P. Ellis (b. ca. 1805) and his married sister, Mary Ann Phillips (b. ca. 1838).
