Biography: 

Thomas M. Covert resided in Orwell, Ashtabula County, Ohio, where he made his living as a shoemaker. At the time of the 1860 Census he and his wife, Phoebe (b. ca. 1840), were parents of a two-year-old daughter, Edith. Thomas Covert mustered into service as a saddler in Co. A, 6th Ohio Cavalry on October 4, 1861 (age 21), was promoted to quartermaster sergeant on March 1, 1865, and mustered out on June 27, 1865.
