Biography: 

Thomas A. Stout (b. ca. 1846), was from Newton County, although at the time Joseph Hughs wrote his letter, Stout’s mother, Eliza, and her younger children were living with her sister, Martha Hughs. He was the nephew of Joseph W. Hughs (b. ca. 1831). He mustered into service as a private in Co. I, 36th Mississippi Infantry on February 26, 1862 (his age was listed as 16) and died on May 23, 1862 (cause not recorded).
