Elijah T. D. Hawkins Letters, 1861-1864

Elijah T. D. Hawkins (b. ca. 1835) was a farmer from Talbot County, Georgia. His name is recorded as Tilmon Hawkins in the Federal Census of 1860, and he is referred to as Tillman in a letter from his brother. The census also indicates that Hawkins and his wife, Margaret (b. ca. 1839), had been married during the previous year. E. T. D. Hawkins enlisted in Co. I, 46th Georgia Infantry on March 4, 1862. He was killed in battle on July 22, 1864. The collection includes four letters written by E. T. D. Hawkins to his wife, and one letter written by his brother, William, who served with him in Co. I. There is also a letter written before the war by a cousin who had moved to north Louisiana.
