Moses J. Kirkland Papers, 1862-1864

The Kirklands were from Coffee County, Georgia. At least five Kirkland brothers, Moses J. (b. ca. 1833), Timothy (b. ca. 1834), Harrison, Richard G., and Zean W. (b. ca. 1840) served in the Confederate Army. Timothy, Harrison, Richard, and Zean all served as privates in Co. C, 50th Georgia Infantry. Of these four, only Zean survived the war. Harrison and Richard both died of Typhoid, Harrison in November 1862 and Richard in March 1863. Timothy was killed in action in Virginia in May 1864. Zean was listed as wounded and a prisoner of war in January 1863. He was eventually discharged. Moses Kirkland served in Newbern’s Company, Georgia Cavalry (Coffee Revengers) and various other cavalry companies. He was present during the fighting around Atlanta in 1864, at which time he lists his unit as Co. I, 6th Regiment, 2nd Brigade. Moses survived the war and at the time of the 1870 Census Moses and brother Zean owned small farms next door to each other. Both were married with children.
