Jesse F. Newsom Papers

The Newsoms were a farm family from Halifax County, North Carolina. Brother James Newsom (b. ca. 1842) and Jesse Newsom (b. ca. 1844) served as privates in Co. A, 14th North Carolina Infantry. James was killed at the Battle of Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864. There are also letters by a brother-in-law, George W. Rooker, who served with the Newsom brothers in Co. A, 14th NC Inf. Additional letters include one to Mollie Newsom from James Newsom’s commanding officer, informing her of her husband’s death, as well as one from her cousin, W. D. Jones, who was serving in the Confederate Army.
