Biography:

Green B. Woody (b. ca. 1830) was a Yancy County, North Carolina farmer and served as a sergeant in Co. C, 58th North Carolina Infantry. At the time of the Federal Census of 1860, Woody and his wife, Catherine (b. ca. 1828), were living on their Yancy County farm with their seven children. This small collection consists of one letter from Green Woody to his wife and children, one letter to Woody from his uncle, George Robertson, and one to Woody from his brother-in-law, Samuel C. Phillips, who lived in neighboring Mitchell County, and who also served in the 58th North Carolina Infantry. Green Woody was eventually promoted and transferred to the regimental staff. He was wounded in the fighting around Atlanta in 1864 but survived the war.
