Cowand (b. ca. 1837) served in the Confederate Army in Co. G, 32nd North Carolina Infantry. Two of his cousins, Alfred E. Cowand (b. ca. 1845), James R. Cowand (b. ca. 1846), and and an uncle, Edward Rice (b. ca. 1835), served in the Union Army in Co. B, 2nd North Carolina Infantry (U. S.) Another cousin, Ralph D.
